Mentoring Skills Course Content |
| Session One |
| The Modern Day Mentor |
| Ideal characteristics; the skills required to be an effective mentor; the benefits to the organisation and the individual; the confidential link; defining the boundaries; developing empathy, trust, and rapport; helping individuals build confidence in their own judgement |
| Coaching and Mentoring – The Difference |
| The difference between coaching and mentoring; establishing and maintaining the mentoring relationship; contracting the ground rules |
| Forming a Relationship |
| Johari Window approach to relationship development; building rapport; developing self awareness and style flexibility through Alias Porters relationship theory; understanding why gaining a shared perspective and alignment of sight is critical to sustainable behaviour change |
| Understanding Mindsets |
| Why brains and talent don’t automatically bring success, how they can actually stand in the way of success - a simple idea about how the brain raises productivity and critical thinking |
| Session Two |
| Questioning Skills |
| Questioning styles to ensure a clear understanding of the approach and perceptions of others; determining why specific reactions should be expected from those being mentored; consultative improvement strategies |
| Communication Techniques |
| Conveying ideas and information effectively; effective listening; building rapport and trust; dealing with misunderstandings and objections; building confidence |

| Application of push and pull technique, assertive – responsive conversations to deliver effective feedback and maintain growth and development |
| Creating Success Through Mentoring |
| Vision; realism; unlocking the true power within an individual; remaining objective; managing the interactions and responding flexibly |
| Making a Commitment |
| Ensuring no conflict of interest; making time; developing a plan; being available in a time of crisis; using your contacts for ‘network’ purposes |
| Overcoming Problems |
| Determining options for overcoming obstacles to successful mentoring arising from personal, team and organisational issue |
