HSE First Aid at Work
The FAW, First Aid at Work Course syllabus as written by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to assist employers to comply withe the HSE First Aid at Work Act (1981). It is the standard qualification for First Aiders in the UK work place and is nationally recognised. It is also the minimum First Aid qualification for anyone wanting to become either an RYA endorsed First Aid Instructor.
Description
Written by the HSE, the syllabus includes
- The role of the first-aider
- The importance of preventing cross-infection
- the need for recording incidents and actions
- use of available equipment
- assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
- CPR
- Use of an AED
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is
- unconscious (including seizure);
- choking
- wounded and bleeding
- suffering from shock
- provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
- administer first aid to a casualty with:
- injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including
- suspected spinal injuries
- chest injuries;
- burns and scalds
- eye injuries
- sudden poisoning
- anaphylactic shock
- recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including
- heart attack
- stroke
- epilepsy
- asthma
- diabetes
Although not part of the standard HSE syllabus, we also cover
- drowning
- secondly drowning
- cold water shock
- seasickness
- hypothermia
- heat stroke
- heat exhaustion
